Health Professional Loan Repayment Program (HPLRP)

The Air Force's Health Professions Loan Repayment Program (HPLRP) is a program to provide a direct accession or retention incentive to maintain  adequate numbers of commissioned officers on active duty who are  qualified in the various health professions. ADHPLRP participants receive  repayment of loans used to finance health profession education. Repayment may consist of loan amounts for principal, interest, and reasonable educational and living expenses.

The program runs on the fiscal year and all completed applications must be received by August 1 for consideration. Currently, specific AFSCs within the Biomedical Sciences Corps, Nurse Corps, and Medical Service Corps are eligible to apply.

The maximum loan repayment is $40,000 per year for up to two years ($80,000 total), minus about 25 percent in federal income taxes, which are taken out prior to disbursement. Payments are sent directly to the lending institution on behalf of the ADHPLRP participant. The maximum annual rate may be updated periodically by the Secretary of Defense.

HPLRP awards are calculated based on ELIGIBLE DEBT as determined by the HPLRP Office. The maximum repayment of total $80,000 is not guaranteed unless the debt is determined as eligible debt for the qualifying degree.

Eligible debt is only considered for debt incurred toward the 1 QUALIFYING DEGREE for the member's AFSC. The Air Force Officer Classification Directory is the source document that provides the type of qualifying degree the member requires in order to obtain their commission.

The service commitment for HPLRP is a two year active duty obligation.
