Health Professional Loan Repayment Program

The purpose of the Air Force Active-Duty Health Professions Loan Repayment Program (ADHPLRP) is to provide a direct accession or retention incentive to maintain adequate numbers of commissioned officers of the armed forces on active duty who are qualified in the various health professions. Participants receive repayment of loans used to finance health profession education.

HPLRP Program Overview (READ CAREFULLY):

  • The Air Force active-duty Health Professions Loan Repayment Program (HPLRP) in fiscal year 2026 is available for the Biomedical Sciences Corps & Nurse Corps ONLY.
  • HPLRP provides an incentive for Air Force active-duty medical personnel to extend their active-duty commitment through the payment of professional educational loans, provided they are in the selected career fields and otherwise eligible.
  • Max HPLRP Payment: The maximum yearly loan repayment is up to $40,000 (NOT Guaranteed), minus 25% in FEDERAL income taxes, which are taken out prior to lender payment. Repayment may consist of loan amounts for principal and interest on reasonable educational and living expenses. Payments are sent directly to the lending institution on behalf of the HPLRP participant and the maximum annual rate may be updated periodically by the Secretary of Defense. STATE Taxes are not taken out, members will be responsible for tax liability.
  • Qualifying Loans: Officers may use HPLRP to repay any qualified loans obtained for their minimum qualifying degree that allows them to hold their AFSC. Degree Programs completed before or after this qualifying degree are NOT eligible. Please email HPLRP for questions about your Qualifying degree.
  • Service Commitment: Program participants incur a two-year minimum active-duty obligation (ADO) regardless of amount of eligible debt. Once Service Agreement is signed, members can NOT decline HPLRP unless they sub?mit a MFR to SecAF.
  • Special Pay Bonus: Are authorized in conjunction with ADHPLRP.  If offering the Special Pay Bonus in conjunction with ADHPLRP, the Special Pay agreement should be signed and process initiated PRIOR to ADHPLRP agreement.  The Active-Duty Service Commitment (ADSC) for the Special Pay and ADHPLRP will be served consecutively (one after another), NOT concurrently.  Special Pay ADSC will be fulfilled prior to ADHPLRP ADSC.
  • AFSC DESCRIPTIONS: The AFOCD is located on myPERS . If this link doesn't take you to it you can search AFOCD once you are logged in. This document has all of the descriptions of the AFSC's along with their education and experience requirements for entry as well as shred outs.
  • NOT Eligible: Due to the limitations of the repayment process, USAA cannot post HPLRP payments. USAA loans are NOT eligible for repayment.  Parent Plus Loans are NOT eligible loans for ADHPLRP repayment as the participant is not listed as a borrower or co-borrower (unless loan has been re-financed into the members name). (10 USC § 2173)
