AFIT Breaks Ground on New Building

In a ceremony held on Thursday, 14 December, the Air Force Institute of Technology broke ground on a new building. This new building, scheduled for occupancy in the summer of 2008, will help AFIT provide better education for its resident students, conduct critical Air Force research projects, and provide graduate education to airmen around the world-officers, enlisted, and civilians.

Power Systems Design Course

In FY06, AFIT's Civil Engineer and Services School re-energized the Power System Design Course (ENG 571) in response to on-going reconstruction missions and home-station efforts to recapitalize electrical infrastructure. The course bridges the gap between an electrical engineer undergraduate degree and the specialized power system design skill set.

Romanian Delegation Visits AFIT

On November 30th, a delegation from Romania’s Military Technical Academy visited to discuss educational opportunities at AFIT. The visit included an AFIT overview brief, a question and answer session with the deans and department heads from the Graduate School of Engineering and Management, and a tour of some of AFIT’s lab facilities.

New Research Underway at AF Center for Systems Engineering

The Air Force Center for Systems Engineering and faculty and students from AFIT’s Graduate School of Engineering and Management have begun two research threads in a makeshift laboratory called the “Robolab” and at partner facilities. The first is intended to develop an integrated health monitoring system for aging aircraft. The second project is taking the Air Force back to its flying roots – morphing aircraft parts – with new high-tech composite materials.

Services Contingency Course Provides "Just in Time" Education

An innovative change in educating deploying Services officers and senior NCOs is in full swing at AFIT's Civil Engineer and Services School. The Services Contingency Course is an intense one-week session in which management teams of officers and SNCOs receive “just in time” education before deploying as expeditionary Services Commanders and Superintendents.

AFIT School Conducts Search and Recovery Exercise

AFIT’s Civil Engineer and Services School is truly taking its educational mission beyond classroom walls. Students in the School’s Mortuary Affairs Course (SVS 462) participated in a search and recovery exercise. The School’s Services faculty sets up a very realistic crash scene, including aircraft parts, personal effects, and even parts from a local butcher to simulate the more gruesome aspects of a crash scene.
