Cutting edge software protection technology, developed at the Center for Cyberspace Research (CCR), is being transitioned to the Air Force Information Operations Center (AFIOC). The new technology, named ESCAPE, was developed to automate the detection and prevention of malicious code such as worms, viruses, exploits, and other malware. ESCAPE, developed by civilian Bill Kimball (December 2008 distinguished graduate from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering), is able to track and detect execution of unsigned malicious code with little impact to the end user. ESCAPE will integrate into an existing AFIOC capability that mimics users visiting websites. The integration of ESCAPE with AFIOC’s capabilities provides the opportunity to automate the detection and collection of malicious code as virtual users traverse the web. As a result, network and host-based signatures will be created to prevent attacks across Air Force and DoD networks. Bill Kimball's thesis advisor was Dr. Rusty Baldwin of AFIT/ENG.
